Heading 2309 covers what Peru buys abroad to feed animals, from dog and cat food to feed for farmed fish and shrimp and the additives that compound feed mills mix into their formulas. Its figures show which part of animal farming depends on imported inputs and which of those parts is growing. In 2026, 124,000 tonnes entered the country, 29% more than the 96,000 of the same stretch of 2025. The value rose a little less than the weight because the price per kilo fell from US$ 1.89 to US$ 1.82. The number of importers also grew, from 160 to 174.

Aquaculture feed explains most of the jump

The product type that grew the most is aquaculture feed. It went from US$ 30 million in the 2025 stretch to US$ 59 million in 2026, up 99%, and it already accounts for 22% of everything imported since 2025. Only 18 companies buy it.

One of them moves a large part of the change. Marinasol SA imported US$ 467,751 in the 2025 stretch and US$ 29 million in 2026, which makes it the top importer of the year, with Ecuador as its main origin. Vitapro SA, the largest importer across the whole period, grew 38%, from US$ 15 million to US$ 20 million, and buys mainly from Chile.

That movement changed the origin map. Ecuador went from US$ 10 million in the 2025 stretch to US$ 39 million in 2026, up 306%, and today carries 17% of the value. The United States held at US$ 41 million and remains first, with 18%. Chile is third, with 13%.

Cat food up, additives moving both ways

In pet food, the change depends on the species. Cat food grew 56%, from US$ 8 million to US$ 13 million. Dog food grew 13% and reached US$ 13 million. Pet food that does not name the species in its description fell 18%, from US$ 18 million to US$ 15 million. Nestle Peru SA, the third importer of the period, grew 17%, with Argentina as its main origin.

Among the inputs for feed mills, additives moved in opposite directions. Proteins and fats rose 61%, from US$ 13 million to US$ 21 million. Gut health products, which group organic acids, probiotics and plant extracts, rose 25%, and mycotoxin binders 15%. Medicated feed, which includes antibiotics and anticoccidials, fell 14%, and vitamin and mineral premixes 3%.

Few large buyers and a year that has not closed yet

The ten largest importers account for 55% of the value since 2025, and the top five for 35%. The 60 companies above US$ 1 million bring in 93% of the value, and the median kilo in that group costs US$ 2.14. Among the 80 that imported less than US$ 100,000, the median kilo rises to US$ 4.17. Part of that gap may come from each company's product mix.

The buyer list changes little from one year to the next. In 2026, 27 companies bought for the first time, and together they add up to just over US$ 1 million. The largest is Olmix Peru SAC, with US$ 755,773 from France. Another 27 stopped buying after importing US$ 2 million in 2025.

What to watch from here

Most likely, aquaculture drove the heading in 2026, although nine months and a single new buyer of that size are not yet enough to know whether the change will last. It is worth following the pace of Marinasol SA in the last quarter and whether Ecuador keeps its place against the United States.

The 2026 figures run to 27 September and are compared with the same stretch of 2025. The country is the origin the importer declares at customs, and values are FOB, without freight or insurance. Each shipment counts in a single product type.

For a feed or additive supplier, the 18 importers of aquaculture feed and the 50 that buy premixes are the first place to look for the rest of 2026.
