Customs figures show which types of tea Peru buys and who brings them in. So far in 2026, Peru imported US$ 2.53 million of tea, 25% more than in the same stretch of 2025, when it reached US$ 2.02 million. That growth comes from matcha and green tea, while black tea, still the largest type, barely moved. In 2026 there are already 25 companies importing matcha, against 17 in all of 2025.

Black tea is still half the market

Black tea accounts for 53% of the value imported since 2025. In 2025 it reached US$ 1.52 million and so far in 2026 it stands at US$ 1.27 million, only 1% more than in the same stretch of the previous year. It is a stable and highly concentrated market. Argentina supplies 80% of the black tea and Poland 9%.

Two companies bring in almost two of every three dollars of black tea. Corporacion Alimentaria SAC imported US$ 495,000 in 2025 and stands at US$ 492,000 in 2026, almost the same in nine months as in the full year. Laboratorios Sma SAC went from US$ 445,000 to US$ 360,000. Behind them is Gw Yichang CIA SA, which fell from US$ 168,000 to US$ 79,000.

Of all the black tea, 82% enters in packs of more than 3 kilos, the bulk tea subheading. Its average value is US$ 1.45 per kilo.

Matcha and green tea explain the growth

Matcha is the fastest growing type. Up to 22 September 2026 it reached US$ 340,000, almost four times what had entered in the same stretch of 2025. It is imported by 30 companies. Since 2025, Japan has shipped US$ 213,000 of matcha and China US$ 191,000. Its average value is US$ 21.24 per kilo, almost 15 times that of black tea.

In 2026 matcha imports are led by Dt Outsourcing SAC, with US$ 78,000, Innovaciones Alimentarias Valsa EIRL, with US$ 45,000, and Vencom SAC, with US$ 32,000. None of the three is among the ten largest tea importers. Of the 25 companies that imported matcha in 2026, 13 had not done so in 2025.

Green tea is also rising. It stands at US$ 415,000 in 2026, 38% more than in the same stretch of 2025, and it is the type with the most importers, 40 in total. Lasino SA is the clearest case. It went from US$ 139,000 in 2025 to US$ 181,000 in 2026, mostly with green tea, and it also brings in matcha and chai.

Jasmine tea, another growing type, stands at US$ 184,000 in 2026, 15% more than in the same stretch of 2025.

Ten companies hold 73% of the value

The ten largest importers account for 73% of the tea that entered since 2025, and they buy very different things. Corporacion Alimentaria SAC, Laboratorios Sma SAC and Negociaciones Marluk SAC bring in almost only black tea. America Capon SAC, the third importer, with US$ 307,000 in 2025, brings in seven different types, among them herbal, jasmine, green and oolong teas, plus blends with no declared type.

Tay y Wu SAC and Lima Restaurant Depot SAC also work with a wide range, with jasmine and green tea as their main types. Supermercados Peruanos SA spreads its purchases across green tea, matcha, black tea and herbal tea.

By origin, Argentina carries 45% of the value through its black tea, China 28% and the United States 8%, almost all of it green tea. China is the most varied supplier. Since 2025 it has shipped green tea worth US$ 383,000, jasmine worth US$ 305,000, herbal tea worth US$ 215,000 and matcha worth US$ 191,000.

What to watch from here

Black tea moves half the value, depends on Argentina and on few buyers, and grows 1%. Matcha and green tea grow faster and add buyers. For a matcha supplier from Japan or China, the relevant figure is that 13 of its 25 importers in 2026 had not bought matcha in 2025.

Three things are worth following. First, whether matcha keeps its pace in the last quarter of 2026. Second, whether the companies leading matcha today repeat their purchases. Third, whether Argentine black tea keeps its weight against Poland.

The 2026 figures run to 22 September and are compared with the same stretch of 2025. The type of each shipment comes from the commercial description the importer declares at customs. Values are FOB, without freight or insurance.
