I went through the customs export records of the four countries, shipment by shipment, to see who bought, from whom and at what price. I counted the 53,390 shipments that declare a buyer. The price per kilo is the value divided by the net kilos.
If you export avocado, this list shows who buys from independent sellers and who ships to itself.
A part of this trade stays inside the group
US$ 278.75 million, 14.9% of the value, moved between companies of one group. Del Monte took US$ 88.81 million from its own company in Mexico. Mission Produce took US$ 76.54 million from its companies in Peru and Mexico. Camposol shipped US$ 29.60 million to its own distribution and Westfalia Fruit moved US$ 27.48 million inside its group. These shipments count in the totals, as customs records them, and I left them out of every price below.
The largest buyers and who sells to them
The 10 largest buyers took 32.9% of the value. Mission Produce led with US$ 104.16 million, followed by Del Monte with US$ 95.15 million and Westfalia Fruit with US$ 86.34 million.
The companies that matter most to an independent exporter sit just behind them. Nature's Pride, in the Netherlands, bought US$ 75.32 million from 22 suppliers at US$ 1.98 per kilo, with no company of its own among them. Its three largest suppliers were close in size: Viru with US$ 10.92 million, Fruty Green Packing, in Colombia, with US$ 10.89 million and Morava with US$ 10.71 million.
Henry Avocado, in the United States, bought US$ 68.38 million from 11 suppliers, all in Mexico, at US$ 2.20. Comercializadora Global Frut sold it US$ 19.52 million, Frutival US$ 19.16 million and Grupo Aguacatero los Cerritos US$ 12.34 million.
Trops, in Spain, bought US$ 50.86 million from 14 suppliers at US$ 2.13, with 1,128 of its 1,148 shipments from Peru. Corporacion Fruticola de Chincha led with US$ 11.59 million, then Consorcio de Productores de Fruta with US$ 7.09 million and Agricola Cerro Prieto with US$ 7.01 million.
Westfalia Fruit also buys from others. Beyond its own group, it took US$ 12.11 million from Sociedad Agricola Drokasa and US$ 6.78 million from Fruty Green Packing, from 40 suppliers in all.
The buyers with the most suppliers
Some buyers spread their purchases widely, and those are the easiest to enter. Dole bought from 29 suppliers, for US$ 22.31 million at US$ 1.95 per kilo. Halls, in the Netherlands, bought from 28, for US$ 19.60 million at US$ 1.79. Jose Luis Montosa, in Spain, bought from 27, for US$ 23.78 million at US$ 1.63. West Pak Avocado bought from 17 and Fruits Cmr Sapoligon Estruch from 18.
Others buy from a few. Avor bought US$ 18.06 million from 15 suppliers, and Viru alone sold it US$ 9.68 million.
Few buyers mix origins: 130 of the 823 bought from two or more of these four countries, and 33 from three or more. Lgs Specialty Sales, in the United States, is one of them, with 357 shipments from Mexico, 218 from Peru and 67 from Colombia. Del Rey Avocado bought from the same three.
Each market has its origin
The United States bought US$ 639.82 million, 34.2% of the value, from 179 buyers. Mexico supplied US$ 514.00 million of that and Peru US$ 110.51 million. The Netherlands bought US$ 483.41 million from 173 buyers, with US$ 362.19 million from Peru and US$ 113.97 million from Colombia. Spain bought US$ 228.85 million, US$ 211.41 million of it from Peru.
Asia splits by origin. Japan bought US$ 56.61 million from Mexico and US$ 21.24 million from Peru. China bought US$ 55.05 million from Peru, and Mexico barely appears there. Korea bought US$ 19.04 million through 36 buyers, with 736 of its 737 shipments from Peru.
Canada and Central America buy from Mexico. Canada bought US$ 76.57 million from Mexico. Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador bought US$ 61.44 million together, US$ 58.97 million of it from Mexico.
What buyers paid
The average price to outside buyers ran from US$ 1.39 per kilo in El Salvador to US$ 2.22 in Costa Rica, among the countries that bought more than US$ 15 million. Japan paid US$ 2.21, the United States US$ 2.19 and Canada US$ 2.17. The Netherlands paid US$ 1.94, Spain US$ 1.88 and China US$ 1.83. Chile paid US$ 1.49.
Organic fresh avocado sold at US$ 2.44 per kilo against US$ 2.00 for the rest, 22.0% higher, across 490 shipments to 37 buyers.
An exporter choosing where to spend the next month of sales work should start with the buyers that already take several suppliers from its origin. I would leave the groups that ship to themselves for last.
